Required CE Hours for Renewal
Consultant/Producer
- One license type (or both Life and Annuities and Health)
- Must complete 16 hours of continuing education
- Two or more license types
- Must complete 24 hours of continuing education (minimum of 8 credit hours applicable to each license type held)
- Must complete at least 3 credit hours of Ethics during each renewal cycle. Ethics courses categorized as Other General Insurance (“OGI”) credits will not be applied to the Ethics requirement.
- No more than 75 percent of required credits may come from courses provided or given by insurance agencies or insurance companies. This includes all insurance companies or agencies, not just companies or agencies with which one is associated.
Public Adjuster
- Must complete 24 credit hours of CE which includes 3 hours of Ethics.

Special Training/Education Requirements (LTC, Flood, Ethics, others)
Annuity Suitability Training
- Agents licensed prior to September 1, 2021 who sell annuities
- Must complete a onetime 1-hour course which includes the best interest standard by March 1, 2022.
- Agents licensed on/after September 1, 2021
- Must complete a one-time 4-hour course which includes the best interest standard prior to engaging in the sale of annuities in Virginia.
- Virginia will accept a non-resident’s annuity suitability training taken in another state, provided it includes the Best Interest standard.

Long Term Care / Long Term Care Partnership
- Must complete 8 hours of initial training, thereafter, agents must completed at least 4 hours of ongoing training every 24 months.
- Nonresident agents who comply with their home state requirement need only take a 2-hour Virginia specific course to meet the requirement in Virginia.

Flood Insurance Training
- An insurance agent who sells flood insurance may satisfy the minimum training and education requirements by completing a course related to the NFIP which has been approved for 3 hours of continuing education credit.

Exemptions
- If you previously received an age 65/20 CE permanent exemption, your license(s) will continue provided you submit a renewal application and pay the appropriate renewal fee.
- If you fail to renew or reinstate your license within 12 months of the renewal date, your permanent exemption will no longer be valid. You will be unable to regain your exemption.

License Term
License(s) will have an expiration date based on birth month and odd/even year of birth. For example, if you were born in an odd-numbered year, your license will expire at the end of your birth month in odd-numbered years. If you were born in an even-numbered year, your license will expire at the end of your birth month in even-numbered years.

Final Exam
- Final exam is closed book.
- A passing score of 70 percent or greater is required for the successful completion of the course.

Certificate of Completion
To get your certificate of completion, log in to our website using your username and password. Then, look at the menu on the left and find "Course History." Your course history will list the courses you passed or failed. If you passed a course, you'll see a "Print certificate" button on the right, allowing you to print your certificate for your records.

How are Hours Reported
We report your credits through Sircon, a state-approved third party vendor, within one business day (except holidays, reporting will be done on next business day). The department receives the credits from Sircon and recognizes the date you passed/completed the exam as the date of completion. It is not based upon the day we report the hours to them.

Course Repetition
- Agents are not allowed to receive or carry forward credit for the same course in the same renewal cycle regardless of format when the course content is based on the same published materials. It is the agent’s responsibility to check the course number to be sure a course is not a duplicate.
- Public Adjuster
- You are not allowed to receive credit for the same course in the same biennium.
- CE credit cannot be given for a duplicate course taught in alternative formats (classroom course, on-line course, video or audio conference, web-conference based, etc.) if the curriculum is based on the same published materials; this rule applies to any variation of course types.

Carry-over Hours
- Consultant/Producer
- Excess credit hours accumulated during any renewal cycle may be carried forward to the next renewal cycle only.
- Excess CE credits will not be carried over if you fail to renew your license during the 90-day renewal period.
- Public Adjuster
- Excess CE credits will not be carried forward to the next renewal cycle.
